Big entry holds back NW HF trade

THE January sale of the North Western Holstein Friesian Breeders Club at Crewe saw its biggest ever entry of 217 animals.

And this did not help the trade which saw buyers in cautious mood last week. Older cows and smaller heifers sold for less than at recent sales, with cows back £170 and heifers £75 compared with the last fixture at this venue.

Joe and Audrey Hilton, two of this sales most staunch supporters, drew the top price of 2700gns for the calved heifer Brownfold BC Bell from their herd at Wigan, Lancs.

She is by Boulet Charles and out of a twice 9500kg Raider daughter Shoremar Raider Bell that made 2600gns when sold at Crewe in 1995 as a calved heifer. BC Bell, giving 32kg a day, was bought by Messrs Anson Farms for their herd in Staffordshire.

And there was more New Year good fortune for the Hiltons when two other entries made the next two highest prices. Brownfold Sunbuck Babs, a calved heifer by Pamtom Blackstar Sunbuck, made 1580gns to J R Williamson and Co, Nantwich. She was out of a Raider cow and goes back to the Horwood Babs family.

Completing the hat-trick was Brownfold BC Layla, another Charles calved heifer out of a Broker cow. She realised 1220gns, selling to R T Gould, Ashbourne. Mr Gould also paid 1200gns for Gornal Lavender 35th, an Etazon Celsius calved heifer from D E Davies and Son, Llanymynech, and 1150gns for T Jolly and Partners Fieldside Dairymaid 37th, a Calbrett Amazon calved heifer from their herd at Great Eccleston, Preston.

Show judge, Andrew Jones, of the Rossett herd in North Wales found his champion in Holly Skychief Willa, a calved heifer from W D Eardley and Partners, Market Drayton, Shropshire. She was unsold.

Reserve ticket went to Smiddiehill Dewbell 35th from W and I Montgomery, Wolverhampton.
