Big pig firm calls in administrators

ONE of the countrys biggest pig farmers has called in the administrators after being hit by the crisis in the industry.

MJH Farms has a breeding herd of 4000 sows and fattens a further 40,000 pigs on indoor and outdoor units across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Lindsay Denney, of administrators Deloitte & Touche, is helping managing director, Michael Hook, of Sandilands Farm, Laughterton, near Lincoln, to reorganise the business.

"Pig farmers are losing substantial sums every week and the more pigs you have the bigger the loss. With banks and feed companies having to bear the brunt of these losses, it is not surprising that some farmers are having to say enough is enough."

Mr Hooks other, much smaller business, the MJ and LD partnership is also in the hands of the same administrators. Deloitte and Touche will be putting the reconstruction proposals to creditors. &#42
