Big winner tops prices at Hereford 150th show

HEREFORD Cattle Societys 150th anniversary show and sale saw a cow that has been a big winner on this summers show circuit make the top price of 2500gns while her heifer calf made 1700gns.

The young cow, Costhorpe 1 Laura L13, collected the title of Poll Female of the Year after big wins including reserve female championships at the Royal Highland and Shropshire Shows and the senior ticket at the National Poll Show.

From Harry Coates noted herd in Leicestershire, Laura L13 is by the Canadian bull PRL 1900 Racquet, and was bought by new breeder George Logan, Co Antrim.

Her nine-month-old heifer calf, by Boundless 1 Knockout, went to Surrey breeders B &#42 and M R Myers.

The Dendor herd of Denis Jones, Caersws, Powys, had a field day taking two male titles. The reserve senior male champion, the Chapelton 1 Highlander son Dendor 1 Marshall, continued his winning ways after a successful show season and topped the bull trade at 2000gns selling to E J Thornhill, Wellington, Shropshire.

Dendor 1 Monarch, also by Highlander, stood supreme and made 1550gns to Phillip Price, from Preston-on-Wye, Hereford.

In-calf heifers sold to 1500gns when R T Davies and Co, Kidderminster, offered Westwood Lively 53rd, reserve junior champion at last years National Horned Show. By Sugwas Benjamin, she was in calf to Oxhill Lawrence and went to D G Jones and Son, Newport, Gwent.

Maiden heifers reached 1050gns, paid by Newtoncroft Farms, Leics, for Blackwell 1 Precious M7, a Lowerhope 1 Grant daughter from Mrs A M Briggs, Chesham, Bucks.

Averages: 20 bulls £1106 and 22 females £818. (RB&B)
