Biggest ever UK Guernsey offer
THE largest sale of Guernseys ever held in the UK took place in Cheshire last week when Sir John Barlow dispersed the 340-head from his Bulkeley herd at Nantwich.
Auctioneer Clive Norbury described the day as "extremely successful". "We had 30 cattle bought for Northern Ireland and three buyers taking 30 head for south Wales herds. West Country support was strong with breeders impressed with the type and performance on offer."
Local commercial milk producers were active throughout the day but the top call came from leading breeders Maurice and May Durbin who run the large Bickfield herd near Bristol. They gave 1750gns for Bulkeley Golden Zena 9th, a second calver that was reserve champion at the Dairy Farming Event last year.
John Posnett who runs the Tiresford herd at Tarporley, Cheshire paid 1000gns twice. His pair included the show winning Bulkeley Golden Snowdrop 2nd. Served heifers sold to 700gns given by Kelston, Cornwall bidder M Grose for a daughter of the North American bull Golden Whey Magic Enticer out of a 9600kg 10th calver.
Averages 162 cows (inc 20 heifer calves at £86) £418, 20 calved heifers £529, 51 served heifers £364 and 70 maiden heifers £171. (Wright-Manley.) *
