Biofuel set-back

INVESTMENTS in alternative energy sources, such as biodiesel, are being seriously undermined by EU plans under Agenda 2000 to axe compulsory set-aside.

And without any alternative policy to encourage production of industrial crops, the progress made to date will be for nothing.

Speaking at last weeks first European Renewable Raw Materials Association (ERMA) conference in Brussels, president of the European Biodiesel Board, Claudio Rocchietta, called for a two-tier system, with higher area aid for producers growing crops for biofuels.
