Bishop leads prayers at pig vigil

Bishop leads prayers at pig vigil

A LEADING clergyman has expressed his sympathy for the plight of pig farmers by praying with protesters at outside the Houses of Parliament.

The Bishop of Hereford, the Rt Rev John Oliver, held the meeting with protestors at Parliament Square to coincide with a delegation of the General Synod, reports the Teletext website.

He said: “We pray especially for those facing hardship and distress – and the loss of their livelihood.”

On Wednesday, the Church of England Synod will debate the pastoral impact of the farming crisis and a motion calling on the government to develop a long-term strategy for agriculture and introduce a retirement scheme for farmers.

If carried, the motion will also call for a reduction in red tape in farming and a clearer labelling policy.
