Black panther in frame for attack

A BLACK panther is suspected of attacking a Herefordshire dairy herd on Saturday.

One cow was scratched along both sides of her rump in the attack on Norman Edwards herd at Middlebrook, Pembridge. Mr Edwards son found the animals in a nervous state and noticed the claw marks on the cow after he brought the herd in for milking.

The police were called and a vet examined the cow. He said the injuries were "almost certainly" caused by a large animal. Mrs Edwards said paw-prints measuring 10cm by 12.5cm had been found in a field. Police had taken plaster casts which have been sent to London Zoo for identification.

She added that four sitings of a black panther-type animal had been reported in the Pembridge area since last summer.
