Blood samples give picture of health

A NEW blood sampling service for dairy cows will give a profile of the nutritional and health status of the herd, alerting producers to any developing concerns, says co-operative MSF, who runs the service.

COWTAILS – COW Track-ing, Analysis, Interpretation for Lactation Success scheme – involves the farm vet taking blood samples from selected cows within the herd.

The samples are analysed to provide a metabolic profile, and the results interpreted to highlight potential problems such as poor fertility, loss of condition and mineral imbalance, says MSF.

Cost of testing works out at less than £20 a cow a year including vets fees. (01905-25541)
