Bordeaux growers hope to replant lost vineyards
BORDEAUX wine-growers are hoping to plant more than 35,000ha (86,484 acres) of new vineyards.
The area given over to wine-growing could increase by up to a third. This is dependent on the granting of permission to extend the vineyards into land formerly under grape before phylloxera struck in the 1870s – destroying almost the entire European wine industry.
Many growers converted to other crops after the epidemic and some of the land has been developed since then.
The Times says the French Government, rival wine-makers and the European Union might opposed the move.
