Borders turns up a winner

A HEIFER that was not brought out for the show classes topped the trade at the latest show and sale for the Border Counties Holstein Friesian Breeders Club.

The event at Carlisle saw local vendors Messrs G and D J Bairds freshly-calved entry Wampool Palme make 1800gns to A Cousar, Craigie, Kilmarnock.

This Jabot daughter was out of the Valiant-sired Edgewell Palme, which made 6000gns at the recent Borderway Black and White Sale and is from one of Germanys leading cow families.

Cumrew Prelude Nymph, a third-calver from A Metcalfe and Sons locally-based herd claimed the championship. She was giving 35kg on the day, having averaged 5.43% butterfat and 3.64% protein in her first two lactations. Buyer at 1250gns was Mr Cousar.

The Kellywell herd of David Robinson, Cockermouth, produced the male champion in Kellywell Star Man, a Kellywell Star Paul son out of an 8800kg Starbuck dam and bred from eight successive generations of Excellent and Very Good cows. He made 1150gns to J Moor, Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton-le-Spring, Co Durham.

AVERAGES: Seven cows £801; 23 heifers £941 and six bulls £1074. (Harrison and Hetherington)n
