Brazil spawns new coffee alliance

BRAZIL will see the debut of a new coffee trade group later this month when the Council of Green Coffee Exporters of Brazil (Cecafe) is formed on 27 April.

The move is a joint venture between the countrys two rival organisations, the Brazilian Association of Coffee Exporters (Abecafe) and the Brazilian Federation of Coffee Exporters.

The new venture is expected to be the first step in the eventual merger of the two groups, which each represent about half of the countrys coffee output.

Abecafe was formed four years ago from dissident members of Febec, formerly the sole coffee trade organisation.

Abecafe was set up in 1995 after members broke away from Febec in an argument over exports.
