Brazilian Government ‘should take its share of blame’ for fires

THE Guardians Society supplement carries a feature on the fires devastating Brazils Amazon forest, which have been blamed on El Niño and local farmers.

But it says it is too easy to apportion blame in this way. It says the fires are an inevitable consequence of the Brazilian Governments continuing development of the Amazon regions.

Last June, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso announced that along the states one highway there would be a 3 million ha (7,401,000 acre) settlement programme, which would more than double agricultural production.
