Bright ideas could be worth money…

IN the run-up to Sheep 96, to be held at the Three Counties showground, Malvern, Worcs, on Wed, July 31, farmers weekly is seeking entries for this years Topical Tips for Sheep Competition.

Flockmasters, members of family, staff, advisers and students who have invented something or devised a system or gadget of a practical nature that could benefit other producers and their sheep are invited to submit entries to our competition now.

Your invention does not have to be brand new. Nor does it need to be big or expensive. What the judges are looking for are imaginative and practical ideas that can save time and money, reduce stress on the shepherd and sheep as well as contribute to stock welfare.

For example, previous winning entries include a plastic pipe coiled through a pile of muck to produce hot water for the lambing shed, a padlocked wooden box to fox thieves with a taste for electric-fence batteries, plastic anti-splash hurdles around the footbath to reduce splash out over the sides, and simple rubber hurdle ties for sheep pens made of old lorry inner tubes.

Your own idea may be a simple gadget or accessory, a handling facility or husbandry tip and will be worth cash and kudos if it wins.

Winning entries will be reviewed and displayed on the farmers weekly stand at the Sheep 96 event, the joint Royal Agricultural Society/Three Counties Agricultural Society/National Sheep Association/farmers weekly event at Malvern, Worcs.

Prizes will include £150 for the winner and £75 for each of the four runners-up. Please dont delay, let us know if you believe you have an idea that deserves recognition at the same time as helping out fellow producers.

How to enter:

&#8226 Describe your idea, how it works, how it came about and how it helped in the management of your or someone elses flock.

&#8226 Where appropriate, include design and construction details and estimated cost.

&#8226 Enclose a drawing, sketch or colour photograph.

Closing date May 10, 1996.
