CAMPAIGNS to encourage consumers to buy British potatoes are having such an effect they are denying Cypriot potato producers their traditional UK market.

Cyprus expects its potato exports to the UK to fall by about 5% in 1998/99 compared with the 38,000t delivered last year.

“We are finding it more difficult to sell to UK supermarkets as Buy British campaigns begin to pay off,” said Panayiotis Stavrou of the Cyprus Potato Marketing Board.

The value of Cypriot exports to the UK last year totalled about CYP£12.8 million (GB£14.4m) compared with CYP£23.7m in 1994.
