Brooms Barn beet research in danger

A SPENDING cut of more than £100,000 at Brooms Barn Research Station is putting work on sugar beet plant stress in jeopardy.

The stations director, Tudor Thomas, Brooms Barn, Bury-St-Edmunds, Suffolk, said: "Seven staff, including five people working on scientific research, are being made redundant.

Work stopped completely?

"I dont know if our research on sugar beet drought and heat stress will be picked up elsewhere or whether it will stop completely," added Mr Thomas.

The cut in funding, following a reduction in grants from the Sugar Beet Research and Education Committee, will be implemented over the next six months. &#42
