Brown rejects financial aid for pig farmers

AGRICULTURE minister Nick Brown has rejected the idea of financial aid to the pig industry, currently suffering its biggest slump in living memory.

Mr Brown said today (Tuesday) that the Government was not prepared to subsidise pig producers, many of whom are making losses of £25 on each pig they sell.

Mr Brown told the House of Commons cross-party agriculture committee that intervention in free markets was against the aims of European Union proposals to reform the Common Agricultural Policy.

Pig prices have plummeted in recent months, mainly due to over-production in Europe and the strength of the Pound which is sucking in pigmeat imports.

Pig farmers are the only sector of UK agriculture which receives no direct public subsidies.
