Brown to force GM labelling

FOOD suppliers and restaurants are to be forced to label which of their products and meals contain genetically modified food, it was revealed yesterday (Sunday).

Agriculture Minister Nick Brown said rules could be introduced “within weeks” to ensure customers could exercise their right to buy food free from GM ingredients.

“People are entitled to make that choice,” he said on ITVs Dimbleby programme.

“There are regulations under consideration now and labelling plays has a very important part to play in that.”

A European Union directive passed last September requires supermarkets and other shops to clearly label which products contain the controversial foodstuffs.

That directive will now be incorporated into British law as will the additional measure requiring all restaurants to list GM ingredients on their menus.

“We will be announcing our final proposals shortly,” said Mr Brown.

Worcester Scientific Services last week found that two out of six foodstuffs tested contained GM ingredients, as did two out of 15 foods on retail sale.

When questioned, many manufacturers said they thought they had bought GM-free ingredients.
