Brussels bans Yorkshire-made feta cheese

BRUSSELS has told a Yorkshire dairy to stop production of its feta cheese because new European regulations give exclusive rights to the Greeks.

Shepherds Purse Cheese supplies between eight and 10 tonnes of the cheese from its factory in the Yorkshire Dales.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has said that that from June 2001, the company will no longer be able to call its product Yorkshire feta.

It cites the European Commissions Protected Designation of Origin Regulation, which states that the name can only be used for sheep or goats milk cheese produced in Greece.
