Brussels sets timetable for deal with South Africa

EUROPEAN Union officials have laid out a timetable for reaching a trade agreement with South Africa by Christmas.

The European Commission was at odds with South Africa over food and wine trade.

In turn, South Africa was angry that Brussels refused to reveal its final offer on agriculture until a side deal could be concluded on wines and spirits.

South Africa is concerned about Europes reluctance to open up its market to agricultural produce, particularly fruit and vegetables, canned fruits and fruit juices.
