BSE found in French goat

A GOAT IN France has been diagnosed with a form of BSE, reports The Times.

The goat came to the attention of veterinary experts two years ago and samples were taken of its brain and injected in to mice which subsequently developed BSE.

About 140,000 goats in the European Union have been tested for BSE but this is the only reported case of a goat developing the disease.

None of the remaining goats in the herd of 300 it came from are reported to have developed the disease.

It is thought that the goat may have developed the disease by eating bovine meat and bone meal, says the paper.

Although this practice was banned in the United Kingdom in 1996 it was not banned in the EU until 2001.
