BSE to disappear within years?

BSE in Britain will be consigned to the history books within the next few years, says a Canadian expert on the disease.

“Predictions are it will disappear totally in the first few years of the next millennium.” Prof Wayne Martin of Ontario Veterinary College Canada told Radio 4s Farming Today programme.

“Id be very surprised if we were seeing many more cases three, four or five years hence.”

The BSE inquiry starts again today in London. It will have video links with experts in New Zealand and Canada, including Professor Martin.

They will be joined by scientists who will answer questions sent to them by the inquiry and there will be an open discussion on the origins and spread of disease.

Prof Martin said “inconsistencies” meant sources would remain unknown for the foreseeable future.
