BSEslaughter talk

MAFF has tried to play down fears that the EU could introduce compulsory whole herd slaughter where a case of BSE has been confirmed and impose an EU-wide ban on beef on the bone.

Despite MEPs voting in favour of the proposals on Wednesday a MAFF spokeswoman said a final decision was some way off.

"There is an awful lot of talking to be done yet. This vote is far from having any final implications," she said.

Helene Judge of the Meat and Livestock Commissions Brussels office said the vote showed people still hadnt accepted the scientific principle of control measures put in place in the UK.

But there was a long way to go because the report now had to go to the Council of Ministers who would be unlikely to accept it as it stood, she said.
