Bunt claim anger
SUGGESTIONS that potentially higher levels of bunt warrant a change to seed treatment choice have drawn an angry response this week.
Leading merchant Dalgety reckons Sibutol (bitertanol + fuberdiazole) has the edge over Beret Gold (fludioxinil) for bunt control and that higher bunt levels make Sibutol its product of choice (Arable, July 14).
But Gary Mills-Thomas at Ciba insists Beret Gold gives "full control of bunt." He also points out that the Official Seed Testing Station reckons bunt levels have been stable in recent years.
Farmers should consider seed treatment choices with care, asking for the one which most closely suits their needs, rather than being "sold" the merchants first choice, he urges. *
