…But RSPBman begs to differ

FARM minister Jack Cunningham should be applauded for keeping CAP reform at the forefront of EU debate, according to Jim Dixon, senior policy director for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

At the beginning of the UKs presidency, the RSPB was concerned that the Agenda 2000 CAP reform proposal contained little detailed information on environmental aid schemes.

"But during the six months Dr Cunningham has shown that he is prepared to consider environmental concerns and spent five hours with environmental groups listening to our viewpoints on agriculture," said Mr Dixon.

"Then he managed to call an additional council on CAP reform in March in which ministers aired their views. This provided useful information for future debates," he said.
