Buyers throng to Millers sale

THE annual Millers sale of Holstein Friesian cattle at Portadown last week saw buyers out in force to produce a heifer average of £1307.

Every lot on offer found a new home as dairystock prices in Northern Ireland recover in line with mainland values.

Top price was 1900gns given by well-known breeder David McClurg, Fortvale, Co Down, for the much-fancied Blackstar heifer, Fidlersgreen Blackstar Iris from Austen Alexander, Newcastle, Co Down.

Bred from the heart of the showing family at Fidlersgreen, she was sold fresh giving six gallons a day.

The Andrews Milling award for the champion heifer went to Jim Morrison, Downpatrick, with Inch Astre Starbuck Delia. She is out of the 76 tonne cow Annalong Star Delia and made 1420gns to N Kee, Co Tyrone.

Mr Morrison also accounted for Midbrook Winnie 6th at 1400gns which stood reserve champion. She is by Hyland Invader and out of vendor D D McDowells high yielding Winnie family from his herd at Newtownards.

Wilson Stewart, Co Antrim, led the cows with the fresh second calver Straidnahanna Barbara 25th, a Dingleburn Sting daughter taken at 1000gns. (Automart)
