Caesarians are up
THE bounty of grass this autumn has increased the number of caesarian sections being carried out by vets for both dairy and beef cows.
Paul Martin, a partner with the Devon-based North Park Veterinary Group, reports that cows are in good condition and therefore producing larger calves than usual.
To avoid difficult calvings, Mr Martin advises producers to exercise cows by turning them out by day, whenever possible.
He also suggests feeding straw to fill them up before offering supplements. Ad lib minerals are also essential to prevent cases of staggers and milk fever.
