Calf and sheep carcasses dumped
FARMERS are dumping the carcasses of dead calves and sheep in streams, woods and on roadsides rather than bear the cost of removal, reports The Times.
Trading standards officers are investigating the dumping of more than 200 sheep and 40 calves in Cheshire in recent weeks.
Many have had their ears cut off to avoid identification.
The newspaper reports another case in which children on a school trip came across the carcasses of 20 sheep.
The animals had been abandoned illegally in the Shropshire Union Canal, near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire.
The National Farmers Union (NFU) has urged farmers to contact their regional NFU branch before resorting to illegal dumping.
