Calf pneumonia vaccine on tap

COMPLETE vaccination of calves at risk from the RSV strain of pneumonia is now possible by eight weeks of age, says C-Vet.

Its Torvac vaccine aims to protect calves up to eight weeks earlier than other vaccines. These eight weeks are when the incidence of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) rises sharply, says C-Vet.

It claims the outlay on vaccination is small compared with the annual costs of calf pneumonia which it estimates at £70 a calf due to lost productivity and antibiotic treatment.

Torvac is given by subcutaneous injection to reduce risk of carcass damage.

Vaccination costs about £4.50 a calf and is available from vets. (01772-436777).
