Car park proposal for set-aside land
SET-ASIDE land on the North York Moors could be turned into car parks if a plan from the national park goes ahead.
It is discussing with local farmers the idea of using set-aside for car parking during the peak season for visitors. Goathland, where the TV series Heartbeat is filmed, could be the first area to adopt the idea.
National park officer, David Arnold-Foster, said that discussions so far have been encouraging. He admitted difficulties over the regulations which prevented farmers from benefiting financially from the use of set-aside land. But he did not expect that this would hold up the new scheme.
