Caste battles hit rural India

BATTLES spurred by caste prejudice, leaving many dead, are emptying the countryside in parts of eastern India, reports The Guardian.

The paper reports on the latest atrocity at Senari village, which saw 34 men dragged from their homes to have their throats cut.

The massacres have meant agricultural land has been left fallow as inhabitants drift away to the cities.
