Centenary lacks for backing

A LACK of resources and sponsorship were blamed for the low-key approach to the centenary celebrations of the Royal Smithfield Clubs carcass competition.

Visitors to the carcass hall were surprised so little had been done, although one of the few display boards showed how beef carcass quality had improved since the early 1960s.

David Gaunt, secretary of the British Simmental Cattle Society, said: "The beef industry needs to capitalise on every bit of promotion it can and the Smithfield could have given a tremendous boost to the image of beef and the way farmers have improved carcass quality."
