BEEF heifers reared on concentrate and barley straw diets grow just as quickly on a low protein diet.
Thats according to a Spanish study at Barcelona University. Researcher Alfred Ferret said that heifer growth rates from 100-230kg on the lower protein diet were the same as for a typical Spanish diet of 17% crude protein.
Concentrate for both groups included ground corn, barley, soya, cassava and sunflower. Soya was included at 16% or 9% in the high and low protein mix, respectively. *
