Check coughing calves for husk

COUGHING calves should be checked for husk following the appearance of cases earlier than usual this year, warns independent vet consultant Tony Andrews.

He attributes the unseasonable husk cases to wet weather, and adds that husk is usually seen in calves before older cattle because they become infected with fewer lungworms.

Check that vaccination and worming policies are adequate to control lungworm, he advises, and ask your vet for a diagnosis on any calves that are coughing, even though it may be due to other causes.
