Chemical worry over food
MANY are worried about the use of chemicals in farming, reports The Daily Telegraph. But becoming organic is not necessarily the answer.
The newspaper takes a detailed look at the potential harm to human health from chemicals used in the production of food. It unearths the somewhat surprising fact that a recent study has found vegetarians are likely to ingest more chemicals than meat eaters – because of the pesticides and herbicides used in production.
It also reports that conditions in factory farms are also likely to have increased the amount of unnecessary antibiotic in our bodies, which in turn has meant the bugs which cause serious human diseases are increasingly resistant to treatment.
All parties are agreed there are good grounds for reducing the levels of pesticide used.
