Chopped pots OK

CHOPPING may help to encourage sheep to eat potatoes when they are first introduced.

Thats according to John Vipond, SAC sheep specialist. "The dry matter content of potatoes is about double that of swedes, but sheep have little difficulty in eating them."

Producers should avoid using excessively dirty potatoes, and clean refusals out of troughs regularly to maintain intake.

"Its important to store potatoes correctly. Exposure to light produces the toxin solandine, so green potatoes should be discarded."
