CJD kills four this year

THERE were four deaths in the first half of this year from the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (nvCJD), linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), according to the Department of Health.

Ten people died from nvCJD in 1997, 10 in 1996 and three in 1995.

Medical specialists say it is too early conclude there will not be an epidemic of human brain disease, caused by people eating BSE-contaminated beef in the 1980s.
