Clone debate call

LIBERAL Democrat MP David Alton has tabled a parliamentary motion calling for a wide ranging debate into the ethics and social implications of cloning.

Mr Alton said the failure of the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh to reveal the full details of their experiments into cloning had serious implications for molecular genetics.

It has emerged that of the five lambs cloned, one grew to twice the normal size in the womb and had to be delivered by caesarian section, and that three animals died soon after birth.

and had malformed organs.

Four of the five were 20% larger than they should have been at birth.
