Compulsory ID

COMPULSORY Euro-rules on sheep and pig identification are expected from the EU commission shortly.

EU animal ID rules were introduced in 1992. But commission officials say they have been ignored by most member states, and consequently any new rules will be compulsory.

That would mean all sheep and pigs would have to be identifiable, and the EU commission could insist on eartags. But EU farm union group COPA argues sheep can be identified equally well using ear-notching or horn and fleece marks.
