Computer tells pig health by grunt

RESEARCHERS at a Belgian university are devising a computer system that can tell farmers when their pigs are ill by decoding their grunts, coughs and wheezes.

The team at the Catholic University in Leuven has recorded 5,000 different sounds from six pigs.

It claims to have developed a database and analysis system that can make an assessment automatically.

Initial trials, reported in the New Scientist, show the program successfully diagnosed 92% of coughs.
