Conference will put safety first

THE Government is to host a conference on farm safety in the south-west this winter which, if successful, could be the platform for a national campaign.

Junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said the aim was to bring together leading figures from the farming industry, agricultural colleges, landowners and the Health and Safety Executive.

“This year has seen some tragic and needless accidents on farms in the south-west,” he said.

“This conference will mark the start of a concerted campaign to raise awareness of this vital issue in the south-west.”

THE government is to host a conference on farm safety in the south-west this winter which, if successful, could be the platform for a national campaign.

A date has yet to be set, but junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said the aim was to bring leading figures from the farming industry, agricultural colleges, landowners and the Health and Safety Executive together.

"This year has seen some tragic and needless accidents on farms in the south-west," he said, adding that, on his last visit to the region, he held talks with farming organisations and the farmworkers union about what could be done to make people more aware of health and safety on farms.

"This conference will mark the start of a concerted campaign to raise awareness of this vital issue in the south-west. If that is successful I would hope it will lead to a national campaign," he said. &#42
