Courses aim to improve skills

SCOTTISH milk producers wishing to improve their management and practical skills can now do so thanks to an SAC and ATB-Landbase initiative launched at last weeks DairyScot event, Ingliston, Edinburgh.

The first series of courses, to be based initially at the SACs Crichton Royal and Auchincruive centres, will cover milk hygiene, feeding, calf management, footcare, fertility and DIY AI.

Cost ranges from £70 for a one-day course on milk hygiene to £295 for a five-day course to improve herd conception rates. All courses include a two-month telephone back-up service to provide on-going support. Details from SAC (01387-263961) or ATB-Landbase (0131-335 3830).

&#8226 Devon dairy producer Sandy Ashford received a £500 cheque at Dairyscot as winner of the Bank of Scotland Ayrshire herd of the year award. His 74-cow herd averaged 5575kg at 4.05% fat and 3.41% protein.n
