Cow demand up at Crewe
TRADE for calved heifers was down £100 on the previous months sale, but the North West Holstein Friesian Breeders Club saw a keen demand for cows at its latest Crewe fixture.
With over 244 on offer, this event is the UKs largest monthly sale of registered black-and-white cattle.
A top call of 2000gns came twice, first for the second-calver Leamington Skybuck Sublime from Warwickshire farmers D and E Trice. Bred out of a Deri Perfection dam, she gave 7792kg as a heifer and stood first in the cow class. She was claimed by A R Cox and Sons, Stafford.
The same buyers also paid 1550gns for Leamington Mascot Merrymaid, a calved heifer out of a 10,000kg dam also from the Trice consignment.
The second 2000gns bid came from Cheshire dairy farmers R E T Summerscales for Holly Sky Chief Villarosa, a calved heifer out of a Warden dam from D W Eardley and Partners, Market Drayton, Shropshire.
Messrs Summerscales also took home the reserve champion paying 1800gns for John * Clay and Partners Crickett Carnation Annabell, a calved heifer from their herd at Ellesmere, Shrop-shire.
Thamesdown Trio Gauloise, a Trio-Sex sired calved heifer out of an 11,000kg Aerostar cow from * Crapper, Derbyshire, stood champion and made 1400gns to J Critchlow from Ashbourne in the same county.
