CPRE presses Government for
clampdown on hedgerow destruction
THE Council for the Protection of Rural England is lobbying the Government to impose stricter safeguards to protect Englands 232,000 miles of hedgerow.
It claims four-fifths of Englands hedgerows have no legal protection against being uprooted by farmers and landowners.
Farmers have to give their local authority 42 days notice of any intention to remove a hedgerow under current rules. Approval for removal is largely determined by Government criteria defining conservation importance.
