Cross-bred bulls for British beef?

CROSS-BRED bulls should have a role in the British beef industry, according to an American delegate to the British Cattle Breeders Club annual conference.

Steve Radokovich of Iowa said hybrids combined the best traits of different animals, ensuring a certain uniformity of stock and improved management.

But UK farmers at the conference were less convinced.

John Elliot of Roxburgh Mains in the Borders was an advocate of the virtues of pedigree Aberdeen-Angus cattle married to performance recording.

This, and a policy of avoiding the high costs involved in auctions, had boosted his income.
