Crystals polish wins the day at Lim fixture…

By Jeremy Hunt

A COW approaching her 10th year and suckling a bull calf was the star attraction at a reduction sale of Limousins from the Stockdales herd last week.

The March 1987-bred Columbjohn Crystal is by Triomph, a three-quarter brother to Sapin, and out of a Wintershall Jupiter sired dam carrying the Blakesley prefix.

A regular breeder and noted for her sound temperament, Crystal had been running with Broadmeadows David and latterly with the Illustre son Middledale Excelsior.

Her June-born bull calf, Stockdales Muscular, was by Broadmeadows Cannon and should provide buyer K Veitch, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, with a useful prospect. The cow and calf outfit made 5000gns.

The reduction from this Carlisle-based herd follows the decision of Noel Stockdale to retire from farming. A small pedigree herd will be continued by brother Gerald and his wife Wendy alongside their new equestrian enterprise.

The herd was established in 1983 after the bull, Ravensworth Rolf, was joined by three foundation cows from the Grahams, Ravensworth and Tanhill herds.

Commercially managed in cubicles and fed outside all-year-round, the Stockdales herd had been awarded the breed societys Certificate Achievement. This sale of genuine cattle with a good depth of breeding attracted a solid trade throughout.

Chester-le-Street buyers J and M R Garthwaite invested 2700gns in Stockdales Fabulous, a June 1990-bred cow by a home-bred son of Bedell Maurice and out of a Tanhill Voici dam.

Fabulous, with a Beef Value of 41, was sold with a six-month bull calf at foot by Middledale Excelsior and was in-calf to him again. Her 18-month-old daughter Stockdales Libby, by Berrichon, made 2000gns to N J and E R Millichap, Keighley, West Yorks.

Mr Veitch also paid 2600gns for Stockdales Evita, a seven-year-old Tanhill Voici cow suckling a bull calf and served again by Exelsior. And making up the shipment for Northern Ireland were two purchases made by Armstrong, Co Tyrone.

He gave 2050gns for Stoneleigh Emily, a 1989-bred cow by Carthorpe Commando with a bull calf at foot by the Middledale sire and an identical bid for a five-year-old cow by Stockdales Benjamin suckling an August bull calf by Triomphe.

Averages: 25 cows and heifers £1687; 22 maiden and yearling heifers £1007; and eight young bulls £1122. (Harrison and Hetherington)
