CSL butterfat monitor

MILK butterfat testing throughout the country is to be monitored monthly by the Central Science Laboratory.

The announcement follows last autumns outcry over discrepancies in butterfat results when the two standard tests produced widely different results.

The CSL, commissioned by the Intervention Board, has completed a study to determine the feasibility of monitoring the proficiency of butterfat testing by laboratories.

That proved successful and the first full round of tests will start this month. The Intervention Board has said that all laboratories must participate.

The CSL will advise each testing site of its performance, and any which fails to reach an acceptable standard will not be allowed to test milk for quota purposes. &#42
