Date set for pig restructuring

By FWi staff

THE government plans to open its long-awaited scheme to allow farmers to leave the pig industry from 4 December, said agriculture minister Nick Brown.

Pig producers are angry that plans for the “restructuring scheme”, promised by Tony Blair at an industry summit last March, have still not come to fruition.

But Mr Brown said he wanted the scheme to work for East Anglian pig farmers suffering financially from the recent outbreak of swine fever in the region.

The “ongoers and outgoers scheme”, worth 66 million over three years, will give grants to farmers who want to restructure their businesses or leave the industry.
