‘Daughter of the soil’ dies

THE Labour MP dubbed a “daughter of the soil” for her part in ending the tied cottage system that caused misery for many rural workers has died.

Joan Maynard was responsible for putting the Rent (Agriculture) Act on the statute. The Act gave agricultural workers security of tenure.
