Defence fund for accused producer

A DEFENCE fund has been set up in support of a Norfolk farmer accused of murdering a teenage suspected burglar.

Tony Martin, of Emneth, near Wisbech, was charged with murder following an attempted break-in at his Norfolk home on August 21.

He was released on bail this week and has been ordered to appear before Norwich magistrates on November 2.

Nick Makin, the Leicestershire solicitor representing Mr Martin, said hundreds of people had voiced support for the 54-year-old bachelor.

Defence fund

A defence fund was set up after anonymous donations had flooded in from well-wishers and supporters, said Mr Makin. The fund, being administered by independent auditors, has received about £10,000 to date.

Insurance company NFU Mutual has estimated the cost of rural crime at £93m last year.

Donations can be sent to: The Tony Martin Defence Fund, M&S Solicitors Ltd, 5 Newton Road, Heather, Leics, LE67 2RD.
