Devon bulls are pick of SW sale
A NEW sale venue for the South Western Limousin Breeders Club reaped rewards last week when 22 bulls averaged £1657 with bull prices peaking at 4000gns for an entry from the Loosebeare herd.
For the Quick family, who run the herd at Crediton, Devon it was a gamble that paid off. For many years they have been loyal supporters of the breed societys sales at Carlisle, despite the 900-mile round trip, but this spring decided to aim their team at Harrison and Hetheringtons new site just outside Bristol.
The Quicks bulls dominated the show and sale ring and accounted for the days three highest bids.
On top was Loosebeare Redhot by the Broadmeadows Cannon son Hartside Jacko and out of a Balfunning Javelin dam. He has a beef value of 24 and a 400-day weight of 588kg, 30kg above the breed average. Redhot stood champion and was bought by KR Sherrell, Portbury, Bristol.
The Quicks managed another 3700gns with Loosebeare Robocop. This son of Greenwell Manager, the Loosebeare herd sire bought at Carlisle in 1997 for 9000gns, is out of an Uplands Buccaneer sired dam. Buyer was PR Ley, Barnstaple, Devon.
Another Manager son, Loosebeare Rolo, made 2600gns to M and D Richards, Bridgwater. He is bred out of a cow by Daim who played an important part in the current success of stock from the Greenwell herd of Ian Nattress in Co Durham.
Selling at 2400gns was Exmoor Sailor, a son of the Greensons Gigolo sired Exmoor Prosper, from WH White, Combe Martin, Devon. Buyer was NR Hill, Cheddar.
However, it was a heifer with a heifer calf at foot that made the days highest price of 4400gns. Sheelin Pinup was part of a reduction from the Sheelin herd of Messrs Brunton, Broxbourne, Herts. Shes by the Dimitri son Brockhurst Loadabull and out of a dam by the Canadian-bred Titan. The heifer calf was by Sheelin Prince, reserve male champion at the last Royal Show.
A 1998-bred Ronick Gains sired cow from the same consignment made 3000gns to Smiths of Bloxham. Sheelin Olivia was suckling a heifer calf by Prince.
Averages: 22 bulls £1675; 14 females £1223. Sheelin herd – nine cows and heifers £2018 and seven maiden heifers £750. Brockhill herd – eight maiden heifers £866. (Harrison and Hetherington) *
